Aging tests are tests that assess how plastic products behave when exposed to environmental factors—such as UV radiation, temperature, and humidity—over an extended period. These factors can cause both visual and mechanical changes, affecting the product’s durability and appearance.
Through aging tests, the manufacturer verifies whether a plastic product retains its properties throughout its service life and whether it meets the requirements of the environment in which the user applies it.
When is it advisable to conduct aging tests on plastic products?
This type of testing is particularly important for products that:
- are intended for outdoor use,
- are exposed to UV radiation, moisture, and fluctuating temperatures,
- must maintain specific aesthetic and mechanical properties for many years.
Case Study: Aging Tests on a Plastic Component
A company in the decorative industry planned to launch a plastic light switch designed for outdoor installation. Such a plastic component is constantly exposed to the elements, particularly UV radiation, which can significantly affect its durability.
The manufacturer prepared five prototypes with different material compositions. The goal was to select a variant that would retain both its mechanical and aesthetic properties for at least 10 years. At the same time, the company was unsure which material composition would be most resistant to aging.
How is the material durability testing process conducted?
The manufacturer contacted the Bydgoszcz Industrial Cluster Tool Valley, which conducts aging tests on plastic products for companies in various industries. After finalizing the details, it was decided to conduct tests using UV lamps and water to replicate outdoor environmental conditions as closely as possible.
The simulation corresponded to approximately 10 years of product use in a garden. The aging tests revealed which of the prototypes retained the most of its properties; however, none of them fully met all the quality requirements.
Based on these results, the manufacturer modified the material’s composition and scheduled further durability tests before launching the product on the market.
Why are aging tests important for manufacturers?
Aging tests are conducted in special aging chambers that simulate the effects of environmental factors. Samples are placed in devices that enable an accelerated simulation of the passage of time, allowing results to be obtained in a much shorter period.
After the test cycle is complete, the tested components are compared with new products. The analysis includes, among other things:
- visual changes (e.g., discoloration, loss of gloss),
- surface damage (e.g., peeling paint),
- changes in mechanical properties (e.g., adhesion, strength).
The results of aging tests provide manufacturers with reliable data necessary for further product development and optimization.
